See, currently, Suvi and Max share a bedroom. They have since Max was about 6 months old. It's worked pretty well except that Suvi is really starting to be frustrated with Max's behaviour and his inability to keep himself away from her precious, girlie stuff.
So, we had decided that for her 7th birthday, Finnegan would move in with Max (becoming The Boys Room...I'm frightened already) and Suvi would get Finnegan's smaller room. We also said we'd decorate it up for her so it would really be a nice, funky girl room for her. She hasn't had that before since she's been stuck with an intrusive and sometimes destructive little brother.
In preparation for this big week in our house, there was a wallpaper border in The Boys Room that would need to come down so we could paint it a boy colour and do a little decorating in there for them, too. I thought I would tackle this today since my mom is coming in from out of town tomorrow and will be spending the week with us, helping us with this crazy, room switching event.
Now, I've peeled enough wallpaper in this house already and, well, it sucks. I hate peeling wallpaper. Hate it. But, this afternoon it was time to get at it. I could not procrastinate any longer. **Disclaimer - I apologize in advance if any of you actually like the paper I'm peeling off but...I don't.**
Here's where it gets, well, funny. I was ready with my scraper, my spray bottle, and some good music on the stereo. I started spraying and peeling, spraying and peeling. Here's what the border looked like at the start (it has mist all over it from my spray bottle). As you can see, it's really not appropriate for two little boys.

But what...what is this? This is really...thick...wallpap...ack! There's ANOTHER border under there! No freaking way!! I started pulling it up and found this treasure underneath:
Yep. Ducks. Best part? This same duck wallpaper was in our family room when we moved in last year and I already peeled that mess off! Thought I was done with the ducks!!
Then, as I peeled away the even tougher layer of icky duck wallpaper, I discovered this:
So, I stopped. I need to have a drink. I need to reconsider my approach. Fire? Acid? Hmmm...better wait until Daddy Crumb gets home and see if I can persuade him to take a crack at it now that I've gotten it started.
Next week, once the rooms are complete, I'll be sure to post before and after pics so you can see if we actually make progress or if I go all Jackson Pollack on these walls.
I'm doing this because I love my kids. Repeat ten times. :)

The wallpaper was terrible.. haha!!!
I was feeling really bad about putting my kids in the same room being that they are different gender.. but if it worked out well for you guys, I am sure we can make it work.
I hope you'll find the right one for your kids. Thanks for sharing. Hey Mom, in case you have great business idea I'd say just go for it.
just had to leave a comment b/c i had a sono the other day and SWEAR it's a boy ... we'll name him Ryan Maxwell and call him Max. I love that name! sorry i haven't been by in a million years. working on a writer's guidelines ebook slooooooooowly!!!!!! talk to you later!
No way! No FREAKIN' WAY! You better make that a double. THAT sucks!
HAHAHA!!! Hilarious!! You know what, you should have just done like the previous owners, and just put the new border over the old!!! LOL!!
J/K, but I feel your pain. We are going to girly up Jade's room later this year, so be sure to post pics!!!
WOW!! It's like it was meant to be there or something :)
Oh No!!
Wall paper is the absolute worst to get off! We have two enitre rooms to do this summer UG.
I left an award for you over on my blog:)
I love planning to redecorate-- picking out paint colours, organising the layout-- and hatehatehate the actual process.
Good luck, I can't wait to see the "after" pictures!
you are such a good mom! i don't think i could do that job. your girl must be so excited about getting her own room. I'll never forget my own special room. it was peach, with peach plush carpeting, and a border with...you guessed it - peach roses!
EWWWW how awful and yet how funny that you post about this now... I lay in bed this morning, staring at my horrible wallpapered, top to bottom walls dreading the job of stripping them and of course reading this, does not make me feel any better about this torturous job! Can you paint over wallpaper????
Thanks for sharing...thanks alot!
lol
Both my kids need their rooms done this summer, but at 13 and 15 you cannot see bare wall for the posters (daughters is wall to ceiling Edward and Jacob posters) and I refuse to remove them...and evidently they are refusing the task too so I might escape that arduous painting job!
Can't wait to see what you do with Suvi's room! I can share the pics with my daughter and it might motivate her to get her little butt in gear!
oh that is aweful but totally something that I would do. I say join them. just put your boarder over the old one.
AAAAHHHHHH, wallpaper!!! I have had many wallpaper nightmares myself so I totally feel for you!!! Oh dear. I don't even know what to say. Because really, it just sucks. Just think of how beautiful the room will be when it is done!
P.S. My oldest daughter's b-day is the 30th, too! She'll be 8.
LOVE THE DUCKS!!! SO retro!
You thought the borders were bad?? Whatever you do, don't chip the plaster. You don't want to know what's under there!
Oh no!
Good luck with the wallpaper. It's the worst to remove.
